Trust & the Art of Surrendering

May 28, 2018 Joyoga / in Yoga Blogby

Last week’s classes were all about trust and the art of surrendering. It’s been a topic dear to me that I have been working with most of this year.

I am posting this slightly late because I joined a retreat during which I was offline. I really wanted to go to this retreat, however for several financial and personal reasons I first decided it wasn’t smart to go. Over the course of weeks, I discussed it with friends and family and after every conversation we figured out it wasn’t the right thing to do at this time. Yet in some way I really felt it was, so I kept putting off my decision whether or not to join.

It took one phone call with a dear friend literally the night before the retreat that made me put all arrangements in place and just go – no matter what. It felt so damn right and I just trusted things would work out.

Interestingly, whilst I was on retreat a project was signed off and all my concerns literally became completely obsolete. And for many reasons I am now so glad I went.

This is a wonderful confirmation of basic trust and that we must follow our guidance system that is always there – it simply becomes snowed under all these physical, mental and emotional messages that cover our awareness about and access to what actually is.

We have been taught to listen to our thoughts, judgements and opinions – mostly at the expense of not following the flow of life. That is a terrible way to live. The crux is, when not in flow with life you will feel it: You’re unhappy, exhausted, dissatisfied and anxious. Your body and your mind hurt. You come to realise that there must be another way of living. That is usually the point when you start seeking.

So, what is the other way?

Paying attention to what is and how it feels rather than to what your thoughts, the ego, friends and family are telling you. Ask yourself that one question: What is the next right move? Don’t listen to all the external stuff, but to how you feel about it. Then take that move and hand the bigger picture over to something greater than your – sorry to say that – little self.

It knows the way. In Sanskrit, this practice is called Ishvara Pranidhana – surrendering to a higher source.

Yin Yoga is a beautiful way to explore this. It’s the yoga of patience and surrender – as the body softens, so does the mind. At the point of least resistance, you simply know where to go.

From this point it becomes possible to trust that you are guided. Everything that is meant to come your way will arrive in due time; the people who are meant to be in your life will be there at the right time; everything you must face is only ever as much as you have the strength to handle.

Osho on trust – audio shared in class

“All bliss, all moments of bliss happen only when you surrender.

Even death becomes beautiful when you can surrender to it.

Then what to say about life?

If you surrender, of course, life is the greatest blessing. It’s a benediction. You are missing the ultimate gift, because you cannot trust.

If you want to learn anything, learn trust. Nothing else is needed.

If you are miserable, nothing else will help. Learn trust.

If you don’t feel any meaning in life and you feel meaninglessness, nothing will help. Learn trust.

Trust gives meaning, because trust makes you capable of aligning the whole to be sent upon you.

The great teaching is, you are already that that you can be. Realise this.

You are already the goal. Be aware of this.

This very moment your destiny can be fulfilled. For what are you waiting?

Don’t believe in gradual steps – take the jump, be courageous!

Let the whole take you away where else it would like to take.
